Ware the Giants’ Wind?
By playerpress.com wire service / April 10, 2009
Brandon Jacobs is still in the New York Giants’ backfield. So is Ahmad Bradshaw.

But with Derrick Ward having left the Giants via free agency to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, third-year running back Danny Ware said he’s ready to step in for Ward as the Wind in the famous Earth, Wind & Fire backfield attack.

Jacobs, the bruising back, rushed for 1,089 yards and 15 touchdowns as the Earth. Ward had 1,025 yards on the ground as Wind and Bradshaw would come in late in games to provide the Fire, rambling through tired defenses for 355 yards at 5.3 yards per carry.

Ware? He had just two carries for 15 yards. But he has worked harder than ever during the off-season to break into the top three and pick up some of Ward’s carries.

“When it’s time for camp I’ll be in the best shape of my life so I can make the most of my carries,” Ware said. “Every carry I want to try to break it and take it to the house because you never know how many carries you’re going to get.

“Even with Derrick in Tampa Bay we still have three good running backs, so we’ll always have fresh legs on the field. Whoever is hot that day is probably going to stay in the game, that’s how it worked last year and hopefully it will stay that way.”

Ware, an undrafted free agent out of Georgia who was originally picked up by the Tennessee Titans before being signed by the New York Jets for their practice squad, is also considered one of the Giants’ top special teams aces.
